[PG-Info05] BIODYNAMIC GARDENING & AGRICULTURAL RESOURCES

BIODYNAMIC GARDENING & AGRICULTURAL RESOURCES [PG-Info05 - V101-080919]

Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association
The Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association purpose is to foster knowledge of the practices and principles of the biodynamic method of agriculture, horticulture, and forestry in the North American continent and to advance the applications of this method through educational activities such as research, lectures, conferences and through issuing and distributing literature on the biodynamic methods, the establishment of information, research and demonstration farming and gardening centers; developing and making available biodynamic compost preparations; and providing consultation and extension services to farmers, gardeners, and foresters.

The Institute for Biodynamic Research
The Institute for Biodynamic Research is the oldest private research institute on organic and biodynamic farming in Europe.

Josephine Porter Institute for Applied Biodynamics, Inc.
The mission of the Josephine Porter Institute for Applied Biodynamics is to heal the earth through production of quality biodynamic preparations, and to advance education and research in biodynamic agriculture.

2005 SaveGaia.com Introduction to the Bio-Dynamic Concepts A good overview of the concept.

An additional excellent resource for this particular approach to Organic & Sustainable Gardening and Farming : http://www.biodynamics.com/catalog/1/book_list

INTRODUCTION TO BIO-DYNAMIC CONCEPTS - BIO-DYNAMIC COMPOSTS, THE KEY TO EVERYTHING [in the biodynamic approach:

"What is compost? Composting is a way to give back to the earth what it gave us, and to recycle organic materials into "Humus, the Health and Wealth of the Earth", as the great soil specialist of last century, Andre Birre, put it -- This was the title of his seminal book.

What is bio-dynamic (or biodynamic) compost? Biodynamic compost is the ultimate form of compost, a compost made according to bio-dynamic specifications. It is a fundamental component of the biodynamic method; serves as a way to recycle animal manures and organic wastes; stabilize nitrogen; and build soil humus and enhance soil health. Biodynamic compost is unique because it is made according to very precise specifications.

Dr Maria C. Linder, Professor of Biochemistry at CalState Fullerton, once wrote about Jack McAndrew: 'Composting is not something one can pick up overnight and really do well. It takes years to get real expertise... Bio-dynamic composting is more scientifically based than most and is by far the most impressive method I have encountered. Jack has studied the process for many years, and with the best Masters in the business.'" (Excerpts from : http://bio-dynamic.info/).

BIODYNAMIC COMPOST: This is the most fundamental element when using bio-dynamic approaches, the sine-qua-non input, since if there is no bio-dynamic compost, no bio-dynamic agriculture is possible. The best source for it we know of in the United States is without doubt Jack McAndrew. His website is still in contruction but already has great information available, including a reprint from a 1952 article about the efforts of pioneer Dr Ehrenfried Pfeiffer.

Mr McAndrew is the only person you can buy any substantial amount of genuine biodynamic compost from in the Western United States. Mr McAndrew apprenticed with the best mentors of the past. Here is how his web site starts:

"I have been interested in sustainable agriculture, organic and functional foods, and biodynamic farming and gardening for over 65 years now. I had the best mentors in the field, such as Peter Dukich, Harris Porter, Erica Sabarth and Margrit Selke, who had themselves apprenticed in the art with Dr Ehrenfried Pfeiffer (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ehrenfried_Pfeiffer ), who, in turn along people such as Viktor Schauberger, André Birre and André Voisin, had in one way or another worked directly with Rudolf Steiner during the formative years of bio-dynamic agriculture, from 1919 to Steiner's death in 1925.

As unfortunately Peter Dukich, Harris Porter (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harris_Porter ), Erica Sabarth, and Margrit Selke (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margrit_selke ) are no more with us today, there is no one left for me to learn from anymore, except experience working with Earth, the Living Planet itself. But, on the other hand, I feel I am starting to really understand compost and the forces at play during composting.

My mentors died at respectable ages, though, an average age of 96.5, and that because of Harris Porter who left us at 83 only, otherwise, the average age of the other ones would be close to 102. It definitely appears that biodynamic agriculture is good for us ... a fact that was well illustrated in Chernobyl, where the only farm fields that did not die off near the epicenter of the nuclear catastrophe were the fields of the local bio-dynamic farm."

THE PREPARATION OF BIO-DYNAMIC COMPOSTS : "To give you an idea of the complexity of the preparation of biodynamic compost, which forms the base of the often incredible results you can get with it, here is an excerpt of a specialized document about it..."

ABSTRACT : Soils & Compost - Healthy soil can improve crop and livestock production. The publications and other resources listed here offer information on how to assess, improve and maintain soil health for both croplands and pastures. Several publications address fertilization and composting specifically for organic production. Soil management can also play an important role in protecting water quality, and additional resources are listed on that topic.

[PG-Info03] ORGANIC & SUSTAINABLE GARDENING AND AGRICULTURAL RESOURCES

ORGANIC & SUSTAINABLE GARDENING AND AGRICULTURAL RESOURCES [PG-Info03 - V101-080919]

ORGANIC GARDENING & FARMING:

Organics Research Centre @ The University of Wales
In their own words, "Organic Centre Wales (OCW) was established in 2000 as a focal point for the dissemination of information on organic food and farming to producers and other interested parties in Wales. In 2003, it was agreed that it should extend its focus to public education, public procurement, policy and strategy development, thus providing support to the whole of the organic community in Wales. It is based at Aberystwyth University". This is why it is listed here, although most readers are probably living far away from Wales (Wales like in "Prince of Wales", Heir to the British Throne), because their public education efforts are outstanding.

OCW is run by a partnership of three organizations actively involved in organic farming research and knowledge transfer in Wales: ADAS, The Organic Research Centre Elm Farm and Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences at Aberystwyth University. OCW core staff are responsible for the co-ordination of the different areas of activity, with the partners responsible for much of the delivery of services to producers and others. The funding for OCW comes from the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) and Farming Connect (with additional support from the European Union EAGGF Objective 1 funds) to carry out the co-ordination functions, with additional funding for delivery through a separate WAG Organic Conversion Information Service contract and the Farming Connect Organic Development Programme.

The Institute for Biodynamic Research

"The Institute for Biodynamic Research is the oldest private research institute on organic and biodynamic farming in Europe. It focuses on the biodynamic approach but has lots of material relevant to standard organic practices".

[PG-Info02] If you don't grow food yourself, here is a good example of what to look for in a successful CSA

If you don't grow food yourself, here is a good example of what to look for in a successful CSA [PG-Info02 - V101-080919]

Here is a good example of what to look for if you can't grow your own organic food yourself yet. This is an article describing a small local CSA, what it does, and how it interacts with its customers. You can find it here: http://www.mauitime.com/Articles-i-2007-10-04-163924.112113-Down_on_Patricks_Farm.html under the title:

Down on Patrick's Farm
How one Peahi farmer grows food for Maui's people,
by Rob Parsons, October 04, 2007

Here are a couple excerpts from the article:

Moser's farm -- For the last eight years Patrick Moser has managed a three-acre farm near the rural confluence known as Five Corners in the Peahi region of Haiku. Each Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, his loyal customers convene to buy his vegetables, herbs and free-range chicken eggs.

While recent discussions over transient vacation rentals have underscored the economic difficulties of making ends meet for local agricultural operations, Moser's Biodynamic Farm is a shining example of a small, successful working farm. A network of similar farm operations dotting the island would surely go a long way towards our sustainability and food security.

(...)

Patrick Moser grew up in Malibu, California, the son of a successful television writer/producer. In his teens, he spent a year working at a plant nursery before taking a job at the Ranch House restaurant in Ojai. His cooking job led to an offer to grow vegetables for the restaurant.

After mentoring with Southern California compost guru Jack McAndrew, Moser traveled to Emerson College in England to start training in Biodynamics. There, he met his wife-to-be, Elizabeth Elliot, who was training to become a Waldorf teacher.

[PG-Info01] PERSONAL GARDENS : DO IT YOURSELF? OR HAVE IT DONE FOR YOU?

PERSONAL GARDENS : DO IT YOURSELF? OR HAVE IT DONE FOR YOU? [PG-Info01 - V101-080918]

This is of course a matter of inclination, time, and budget.

Our general thinking about the issue is that best and most beneficial to you (exercize, etc) is to do it yourself. Which of course is also the most cost-effective way to go -- provided, of course, that you first inform yourself properly.

Which is precisely what this blog is about.

However, to give you an idea of what it costs to have it done for you here in Southern California, here is a typical answer to an inquiry about what it would cost to have it done for you.

This will also give you a first idea about the issues you'd want to consider when doing it yourself...

"First, we usually work on the basis of 4 x 8 no- till raised-bed "Gardening Units", as they are the optimal solution to creating efficient food-producing organic gardens. Of course, we could custom-design anything else you'd have in mind.

These units use three 4" x 8' standard pieces of wood, that is, a total of 9 pieces (3 for each side for the length, and 3 more cut in two for the ends). Of course, other boards and heights can be used to suit your tastes and desires. Or even other suitable materials, such as stone, ceramic plates, bricks, etc.

Our standard approach produces a roughly 11" raised bed, and obviously adding more wood can raise that height by a bit less than 4" for each addittional piece of wood. The calculations would be changed accordingly if 6" x 8' board would be used.

At the bottom of these frame, we place cardboard as a barrier to existing weed seeds, and, if you so desire, a metallic barrier for gophers and similar animals, which can widely vary in price and quality, the cheapest being simply 4' wide chicken wire.

These beds are then filled with suitable soils we design ourselves from a variety of available organic materials, which also vary widely in price and quality.

Besides the effect of such choices, price per unit all depends on numerous other factors. For example:

How much of the preparation work you'd want to put in yourself, if any? (And how much such work is necessary?)

Would you want us to use new wood, or save you money by locating used wood, is it proves possible? Or do you have wood available?

Would you want the wood to be untreated, or or to be treated naturally, with a boric acid solution one could drink, and flax oil one could eat?

Would you want watering / irrigation to be integrated into the garden (soaker hoses, water posts, timers, etc), or not?

Do you want to do your own seeding and planting, or have us do it for you, and what eactly do you want to have pre-seeded or planted?

Do you just want vegetable beds, or also beds, structures or plantings integrating fruit-bearing perennials and trees?

Etc.
As for the soil, same thing. You can choose from the cheapest available topsoil (like $20-$30 a ton - delivered, and mentioned here just as an example, of course) to a pure organic combination of alfafa, kelp, humic materials, wild oak leaf mold and dairy-cow-manure-based bio-dynamic compost at $ 2,000 a ton. And anything in between. There is quite some room here too, as you can see. Notice that properly designed soil mixes usually do NOT need any additional fertilizer, so there is no need to budget that in.

All this considered, the price per unit can vary between something like $300+ to $900+ for the budget end, and the sky is the limit if you want fully automated units with polished granite bed walls filled with pure biodynamic compost and the most exquisite designer soil mixes, and pre-planted with already well-grown choices vegetables, including rare plants.

As a general rule, each 100 square feet (that is, roughly, 3 units) loosely maintained will produce at least 100 pounds of fresh, organic food, a year. This could rise to as much as 500 pounds or more if gardened intensively. As a budgeting basis, you can consider that the price of organic produce at the market is usually between $2 and $5 a pound, although the extremes are $1 and $10+. The math is easy.

The best approach would perhaps for you to give us what budget you might have in mind, per unit, and how many units you'd want to have installed, along with whatever general information coming to your mind as you read this.

We will then call you (we need your phone for that, of course), answer your questions, discuss the particulars, and come up with a precise estimate on the basis of the information provided."

When you create your own Personal Organic & Sustainable Garden, you of course have to look at the same issues a seasoned gardener looks at when considering installing a garden for someone else, and from the same points of view.

Again, helping you do so is what this blog, and our sister-blog http://optimalgardens.blogspot.com/ are about!

[PG-Info00] FREE RESOURCES FOR GARDENERS & FARMERS

FREE RESOURCES FOR GARDENERS & FARMERS [PG-Info00 V100-080915]

There are numerous resources available, almost too many, and there is a big caveat coming with many if not most of the "free" resources. Many "free" resources in fact try to sell you something, usually man-made chemicals, GMO (genetically-modified) seeds, and the like, or at least the idea of using them, to get a "better" garden.
Now if pesticides-, herbicides-, and GMO-laden produce is your idea of optimal food, why bother with a garden at all? Think of it! Your local supermarkets and fast-food joints will be more than happy to sell them to you at no efforts of your part!

General Resources about Organic & Sustainable Gardening :

Organic Gardening: A Guide to Resources 1989-September 2003, Compiled by:
Stephanie M. Boehmer, Alternative Farming Systems Information Center at the National Agricultural Library, Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. http://www.nal.usda.gov/afsic/AFSIC_pubs/org_gar.htm

The Journey to Forever Small Farms Library provides free full-text online access to the essential texts on sustainable farming and gardening and related topics. It includes many classics that are now difficult to find. This is the foundation work that put organic farming and gardening on a sound scientific basis in the first half of the 20th century, and put it into practice around the world. There are no modern replacements for these books. http://journeytoforever.org/garden_link.html

How such compost is made: http://compostis.us/

Introduction to CSA and Farm Supported Communities provided by the Biodynamic Farming and Gardening Association: http://www.biodynamics.com/csa.html

Many more to come, after careful evaluation of their potential practical worth to you.

COOPERATIVE EXTENSIONS: By law, all U.S. "Land Grant Universities" have to maintain a "Cooperative Extension" which are at the service of farmers and gardeners at no cost to you for all basic services and information.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COOPERATIVE EXTENSIONS :

* LOS ANGELES COUNTY: Month-by-month gardening tips or sign up for their Master Gardener course in Los Angeles County at http://celosangeles.ucdavis.edu/ . Always precise that you are looking for ORGANIC gardening information and nothing else!
Help Line : Questions can be left at (323) 260-3238.

* ORANGE COUNTY information can be found at http://www.uccemg.com/ .

* RIVERSIDE COUNTY Help Line: (951) 683-6491.

* VENTURA COUNTY Help Line: (805) 645-1455.

Other parts of California, and rest of the United States: Look for "Cooperative Extension" in your phone book or making an Internet search.

UC and Cooperative Extensions are obviously not the only free resources available to you, and we will add more of them here from time to time. But, as already told, you must AT ALL TIMES REMAIN AWARE of the fact that many "free" resources try to sell you something, usually man-made chemicals, GMO (genetically-modified) seeds, etc, or at least the idea of using them, to get a "better" garden. Now if pesticides-, herbicides-, and GMO-laden produce is your idea of optimal food, why bother with a garden at all? Your local supermarkets and fast-food joints will be more than happy to sell them to you at no efforts of your part, isn't it?

[PG-List00] SHORT DESCRIPTIVE LIST OF THIS BLOG'S POSTINGS
This is the post you are reading. It gives a short description of all existing posts, modified once a week.

[PG-Info00] FREE RESOURCES FOR GARDENERS & FARMERS
There are numerous resources available, almost too many, and there is a big caveat coming with many if not most of the "free" resources. Many "free" resources in fact try to sell you something, usually man-made chemicals, GMO (genetically-modified) seeds, and the like, or at least the idea of using them, to get a "better" garden.

[PG-Info01] PERSONAL GARDENS : DO IT YOURSELF? OR HAVE IT DONE FOR YOU?
This is of course a matter of inclination, time, and budget. Our general thinking about the issue is that best and most beneficial to you (exercize, etc) is to do it yourself. Which of course is also the most cost-effective way to go -- provided, of course, that you first inform yourself properly. Which is precisely what this blog is about. However, to give you an idea of what it costs to have it done for you here in Southern California, here is a typical answer to an inquiry about what it would cost to have it done for you.

[PG-Info02] If you don't grow food yourself, here is a good ex...
Down on Patrick's Farm - How one Peahi farmer grows food for Maui's people,
It tells the story of a Malibu native who apprenticed in So Cal with the last living great specialist of biodynamic composting, and went on to establish a CSA in Hawaii. Very inspiring.

[PG-Anal01] ANALYZING THE OFFICIAL 'ORGANIC' EFFORTS & PUTTING...
ANALYZING THE OFFICIAL 'ORGANIC' EFFORTS & PUTTING THEM IN PERSPECTIVE There is a quite interesting organisation named the OFRF, standing for "Organic Farming Research Foundation". It represents the organized "certified" organic farming interest. Its material is quite interesting to look at, from several points of view. First, because it usually contains valuable information, second, for what it does, and what it says, and for what it does NOT do, and does NOT say.

Example of market offering for a ready-made gardening unit [OG-Mark01 – V100-080918] This is a typical commercial ad about a ready-made gardening unit (it even refers to us! :) The reply address has been deleted as this is an advertising-free blog, but it gives you an idea of what you can find and for how much! It will of course cost you at least 35% less if you do it yourself.)

COMPOST TEA? WHY IS IT SO GOOD FOR YOUR GARDEN OR FARM? Compost tea is ancient. You can find references to it in texts dating back to the Roman Empire (in Cato's "De Agricultura"). So says a real doyenne of dirt, microbial ecologist Elaine Ingham

The present list will be modified as more posts are added, allowing you to navigate easily to what is of interest to you.

Always remember: When you create your own Personal Organic & Sustainable Garden, you of course have to look at the same issues a seasoned gardener looks at when considering installing a garden for someone else, and from the same points of view. Again, helping you do so is what this blog, and our sister-blog http://optimalgardens.blogspot.com/ are about! And for composting, go to http://biocomposts.blogspot.com/ .
